Site Tour
Thank you for visiting VoteOften. VoteOften is a website where you can make your voice heard by voting and discussing the news. There are many cool features for interacting with articles as well as your friends. This site tour will explain what these features can do. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Voting
Voting is the simplest way for you to express your opinions at VoteOften. Vote for or against articles depending on whether you agree or disagree with their content or simply think others should see them. Voting affects an article's popularity and is one of the main factors in determining an article's placement or rank on the site. Use the power of your VoteOften!
Bias Voting
You can vote for an article's bias by moving the handle on the slider. Move the handle by clicking and dragging. The slider has a gradient backdrop of blue to red to signify a liberal (left) or conservative (right) slant. Once you let go of the handle, your bias vote will be averaged in with the votes of other users. After refreshing the page, the handle will be in the position of the new average. Move the handle to another position to replace your previous bias vote.
Election 2008 Candidate Ratings
If an article is about the upcoming election, you can rate candidates mentioned in the article. On the individual article's page (click "more" or "comments" to get there), click "show" on the Election 2008 Ratings section to display a ratings form as well as a chart depicting current ratings for the candidates. Submit a rating, and the chart will automatically be updated. You can see all of your ratings in the Election 2008 subsection of your profile.
Add Tag Requests
If an article is missing a tag, you can submit an add tag request. Click "show" on the Add Tag Requests section to display current requests submitted by other users. If the tag you want to add is not listed, click "submit request" and use the form to submit your tag. Use the "Other" text field to enter a tag that is not included in the rest of the form. Use the thumbs to vote for or against tag requests, similar to voting on comments and articles. Once a vote threshold is reached, the tag will automatically be added to the article.
Friend Activity
VoteOften makes it easy to see what your friends are doing. When a mutual friend votes for, comments on, or submits an article, a notification will be displayed in the Friend Activity widget in the right sidebar of most pages. Sample friend activity is shown in this widget for new users. Use the "add to friends" link in user profiles to submit a friend request. Also, in the friends subsection of your profile, you can see a list of your friends and their activity.
Favoriting, Tracking, and Reporting
Favorite: You can add articles that you particularly like to your favorites list. Simply click the "favorites" link in each article listing to add it to your favorites. All of your favorites are listed on your home profile page.
Track: Track articles that you may want to look at later by clicking the "track" link in each article listing. Articles you're tracking are listed in the Tracked Articles profile page.
Report: Use the report feature to bring our attention to articles that are abusive or inappropriate.
Comments
Submit comments on articles to express your opinions. Just like articles and add tag requests, comments can be voted on as well.
